Media Depiction of Teenagers Free Essays
Britain, the land of hope and glory, or maybe not. Media today seems to be painting an inept picture of Britain, the land of drugs and ASBOââ¬â¢s. Are we really that bad? Can you seriously say that all teenagers are unbelievably badly behaved even when weââ¬â¢re not! Sure, we as teenagers are sometimes bad and donââ¬â¢t do homework, however, what about the adults who are mercilessly murdering innocent people? Have we simply forgotten about those? I hope not, I think that itââ¬â¢s about time we started to remember those few adults and started to weigh the sides against each other. We will write a custom essay sample on Media Depiction of Teenagers or any similar topic only for you Order Now Fact is, whatever way you look at it, people are bad. There are a select few that sit on street corners, drinking vodka and use every swear word that is known to man at old ladies driving past in their little miniââ¬â¢s. Yes, but at least we arenââ¬â¢t on the M11 speeding at 100 miles per our and totalling three cars every five minutes. Yes, we arenââ¬â¢t perfect but neither are these so called adults. So to say that we are all ââ¬Å"little emperorsâ⬠is that at all fair? No! Of course it isnââ¬â¢t. Itââ¬â¢s only a small percentage of people, namely teenagers, who actually do these hanist crimes. So, stop giving just teenagers a hard time, all the time. Be fair for once and we may, just may, start treating you with the respect you all demand most of the time unfairly. A perfect example of a ââ¬Å"Jeremy Kyleâ⬠teenager is a Miss Emily Travell, only fifteen, and pregnant with her second child, a regular in the local boozers and with a reputation not to be shouted about. Not a freshman to the police either, just recently was taken in for indecent exposure, however, Iââ¬â¢m sure whenever she isnââ¬â¢t drinking, taking unseemly powders, that she is really quite nice. Also thereââ¬â¢s a saying ââ¬Å"You grow up like those who youââ¬â¢re aroundâ⬠, what about that? Yes, ok, using Emily Travell as an example does actually show you what some, not all teenagers, get up to, however, she is only a very small percentage of the population that chooses to act in this appalling way. Most teens are actually really well behaved; they donââ¬â¢t commit crime, they donââ¬â¢t have underage sex and actually do act like teenagers should. However can you even define what a good teenager is anymore? If you look at most adults they arenââ¬â¢t exactly the best role models in the world, so how are we supposed to act? Its confusing; you say act like your parents would; some do and get slated for it. Fact is, that we are teenagers and yes, I agree that neo excuse for anything we do wrong but Iââ¬â¢m positive that when you were our age you would have acted the same, maybe you did things in different ways, however itââ¬â¢s the same sort of principle. If you are fair in judging us then maybe we could return that small favour? Maybe that rebellious instinct that we are all born with is still there in you adults too? No one is perfect, that is a simple fact of life which wonââ¬â¢t be changing anytime soon, nor can you really determine what perfect is. Maybe, just maybe, if you were to stop squabbling amongst and actually, shock horror, started to act like adults, then maybe we might start taking you for real as a proper role model, not a fake one. Exams; how on earth would you know that theyââ¬â¢re getting easier? Youââ¬â¢re not taking them; we are and let me confirm that in no way, shape or form are they getting easier; quite the opposite really. Sorry and all but when youââ¬â¢ve been writing for days on end trying to desperately get your coursework done and then your plonked right in front of an hour writing exam, is that not a decent enough reason for us to be annoyed at the adult race who believes it great to get us to do a few tests here and a few more there? Also I would like to see each adult that has a problem with the current GCSE test difficulty to get out of their office and sit them; lets see if you all pass and if your opinion changes. I can bet it will. Frankly, GCSEââ¬â¢s seem pointless because theyââ¬â¢re always changing therefore if were all being fair here, how on earth can you get a consistent reading which you can compare? Without a sure set of results you canââ¬â¢t expect people to just take your word for the exams getting easier. Maybe if you stopped changing them every two days then we may just get something to use on a larger scale and from that we can show whether GCSEs are getting harder or as you say, easier. Although I suppose the adults, our parents, have forgotten the general idea that teachers may get better training than that of 1852, yes, they actually do. Remember those taxes you moan about too? That helps for their training to so donââ¬â¢t be such a hypocrite. They get at least six, yes, count them, six training days a year. Surely that means that teachers are better qualified? Besides why would you want to mean now? You are never happy, you are grumpy and absolutely kill us however when we actually do something right for once they moan even more! Itââ¬â¢s a vicious cycle which we canââ¬â¢t escape from. You really donââ¬â¢t even give us a chance to get better since you donââ¬â¢t help, you simply bombard our minds and emotions with rants about pointless things we donââ¬â¢t need to hear for the 50th time. Thatââ¬â¢s a great example of us being bitter because you talk too much. At the end of the day, we are trying our best to behave and get good grades, which is incidentally what you want us to do. If you want us to do something else, then simply say. We have no choice but to do it because we live under your roof. All we ask is that you are fair when you judge us because if Iââ¬â¢m blunt, you havenââ¬â¢t been and truthfully youââ¬â¢ve just made the situation worsen and made it deeper. At the end of the day when I sit down to watch the BBC news, I expect to see teenagers being unfairly slandered. I can only hope for the day when our children can see a completely different screen. TASK Write A Personality Profile Of The Main Character (Mary Maloney)
TASK: Write a personality profile of the main character (Mary Maloney) in the story. Consider appearance, personality, motive and behavior. Mary Maloney is a perfect and devoted house wife, also an expectant mother. She waits happily each night for the arrival of her husband Patrick from work at the police station. But on one Thursday night, she comites an almost perfect murder. The author Roald Dahl has developed the character of Mary Maloney both through direct and indirect characterization. This reveals her character as being dynamic through her words and personality, and is what makes this short story a success. The first scene is one of a typical house wife longing for her husband to return from work. Everything appears to be too perfect and it was almost as if she was expecting something odd to happen. After her husband Patrick reveals his affliction, Mary's behavior changes from being wife-pleasing-husband to self-observant women who was unstable and quite aggressive. It was almost as if she hits her husband over the head with the leg of lamb naturally, and without hesitation. ....Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could.... She had rejected what her husband had just told her and goes into a state of mind where she had blocked out reality and where her actions are the result of this metamorphoses behavior. Her devotion to Patrick became so obsessive to the point of killing him. Mrs. Maloney was faced with a number of challenges and problems which she had to overcome, both emotionally and psychologically. She had to cope with the realization of rejection of her husband and come to terms with the fact that her marriage was over. Also, she had to deal with the actual murder of Patrick and establish an alibi. But Mary Maloney was a clever women and it was almost as if she suddenly knew what to do after killing her husband. It was as if she had been prepared for months. She tries successfully to simulate normal behavior as much as possible by acting out her daily routine. She sat down before the mirror, tided her face, touched up her lips and face. She tried a smile. It came out rather peculiar. She tried again. Mary Maloney's decision to cover up the murder was most likely based on her unborn child. She considered the fait of the baby and wasn't prepared to take any chances. As the wife of a detective she knew what the penalty would be. The unborn child was the motive for her actions after the murder. Also, the fact that she was an expectant mother convinced the reader to feel for her and somewhat made them wanting her to get away with the murder. Throughout the story she is described as an inoffensive and harmless person which further reveals to the reader that she didn't intend to kill her husband and that what she did afterwards was for the unborn child. Establishing an alibi was an easy task for Mrs. Maloney. She makes intelligent conversation with Sam, the grocery shop owner. She explains to him that Patrick was at home and didn't want to go out that night, leaving her with no vegetables in the house for supper. Her technique was to keep on asking her questions, asking what he would suggest for dessert, so later when the police would arrive, Sam would remember quite clearly remember Mrs. Maloney's visit. He would tell the police that she was in a normal state of mind and cheerful state, and therefore, letting her off the hook. We see even more deceitfulness through her words when she eradicates all of the evidence. When the police arrive and are searching for a weapon, she asks for her husbands whiskey. Would you mind giving me a drink? Sure, I'll get you a drink. You mean this whiskey? Yes please All of the detectives end up having a drink and stop searching for the evidence. When the lamb is consumed by the officers, the reader further realizes that Mary Maloney gets away easily by using deceitful lies and a concrete

The Respiratory System essays
The Respiratory System essays The human respiratory system is a complex system involving the coordination of organs with different structural, functional and defensive mechanisms. The high costs and the high fatality rates associated with chronic respiratory disorders require some serious rethinking in our approach to managing the problem. It transpires that the maxim prevention is better than cure is very apt in the management of respiratory disorders. Smoking is identified as the single most important cause for most of the serious respiratory problems including COPD and lung cancer, and hence abstaining from smoking eliminates the risk for the onset of several serious respiratory disorders. The human respiratory system is a well-developed and complex system involving many different organs such as the nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea and the lungs. Though the actual physiological function of breathing begins only at birth, the development of the respiratory tract, the diaphragm and the lungs occur much earlier in the embryonic stage. Structural and functional changes continue from infancy to adulthood and into old age, as the respiratory system matures with age. There are various diseases of the respiratory system such as asthma, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, lung cancer, etc. While Asthma is a genetic disease, Tuberculosis, lung cancer, etc, are acquired pulmonary diseases. Life style and environmental factors are important in contributing to and increasing the susceptibility to respiratory disorders. The following discussion includes a brief overview of the structural development of the human respiratory system followed by an o verview of COPD and Tuberculosis, two of the prevalent diseases of the respiratory system, and their impact on occupational performance. History of Naturalization Requirements in the U.S.
History of Naturalization Requirements in the U.S. Naturalization is the process of gaining United States citizenship. Becoming an American citizen is the ultimate goal for many immigrants, but very few people are aware that the requirements for naturalization have been over 200 years in the making. Legislative History of Naturalization Before applying for naturalization, most immigrants must have spent 5 years as a permanent resident in the United States. How did we come up with the 5-year rule? The answer is found in the legislative history of immigration to the U.S. Naturalization requirements are set out in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the basic body of immigration law. Before the INA was created in 1952, a variety of statutes governed immigration law. Lets take a look at the major changes to naturalization requirements. Before the Act of March 26, 1790, naturalization was under the control of the individual states. This first federal activity established a uniform rule for naturalization by setting the residence requirement at 2 years. The Act of January 29, 1795, repealed the 1790 act and raised the residency requirement to 5 years. It also required, for the first time, a declaration of intention to seek citizenship at least 3 years before naturalization.Along came the Naturalization Act of June 18, 1798 - a time when political tensions were running high and there was an increased desire to guard the nation. The residence requirement for naturalization was raised from 5 years to 14 years.Four years later, Congress passed the Naturalization Act of April 14, 1802, which reduced the residence period for naturalization from 14 years back to 5 years. The Act of May 26, 1824, made it easier for the naturalization of certain aliens who had entered the U.S. as minors, by setting a 2-year instead of a 3-year interval between the declaration of intention and admission to citizenship. The Act of May 11, 1922, was an extension of a 1921 Act and included an amendment that changed the residency requirement in a Western Hemisphere country from 1 year to the current requirement of 5 years.Noncitizens who had served honorably in the U.S. armed forces during the Vietnam conflict or in other periods of military hostilities were recognized in the Act of October 24, 1968. This act amended the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, providing an expedited naturalization process for these military members. The 2-year continuous U.S. residence requirement was done away with in the Act of October 5, 1978.A major overhaul of immigration law occurred with the Immigration Act of November 29, 1990. In it, state residency requirements were reduced to the current requirement of 3 months. Naturalization Requirements Today Todays general naturalization requirements state that you must have 5 years as a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. prior to filing, with no single absence from the U.S. of more than 1 year. In addition, you must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the previous 5 years and resided within a state or district for at least 3 months. It is important to note that there are exceptions to the 5-year rule for certain people. These include: spouses of U.S. citizens; employees of the U.S. Government (including the U.S. Armed Forces); American research institutes recognized by the Attorney General; recognized U.S. religious organizations; U.S. research institutions; an American firm engaged in the development of foreign trade and commerce of the U.S.; and certain public international organizations involving the U.S. USCIS has special help available for naturalization candidates with disabilities and the government makes some exceptions on requirements for elderly people.
